Slot classic review: Avalon from Microgaming

“Avalon” is a classic slot from the company Microgaming, which is already a few years old, but is still convincing due to its many cool bonus features. Since I'm already a big fan of classic slots that aren't as cluttered as many current new releases, I took a closer look at the game. I'll tell you whether I can recommend it in my review below.

Design

Sure, the design of “Avalon” is already getting old and can be used with various new ones Slots barely keep up. But this is often what nostalgia lovers want. After all, there is a reason why video games from the 90s are now back in fashion. “Avalon” takes its players back to the time of King Arthur and his legendary Round Table. Although the king himself does not appear on the playing field, he is at least present in the form of a pompous crown. Like all other symbols on the playing field, this is nicely presented. The same also applies to the background used. You can see a castle shrouded in fog and the “Lady of the Lake”, who holds a sword in her hands and is also the most important figure in the game. As I said, it's not all that impressive. But retro lovers will still have fun with the design of the slot.

Gameplay

If you don't like slots that require you to read and understand lengthy instructions, you will quickly fall in love with “Avalon”. The slot comes with a classic playing field made up of 5 reels and 3 rows. There are 20 fixed winning lines spread across these. The aim of the game is to collect at least three identical symbols from left to right on a winning line. With the higher-priced symbols, it is enough to hit two identical symbols next to each other. The playing card symbols 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace only pay minimal winnings. While the woman in the mist, the chalice, the emerald and the coat of arms are already a little more valuable. What is really attractive are the crown, the treasure chest and of course the Lady of the Lake, which act as the most valuable symbols in the game. The treasure chest and the lady also both come with another function.

Wild symbol

The Avalon symbol is the in the base game Wild symbol. It can substitute for all other symbols except the scatter, triggering additional winning combinations. With a bit of luck, the wild symbol will be placed in a row with two identical symbols, giving you a great cash prize.

Scatter icon

This is the Lady of the Lake Scatter icon in the game. If you manage to spin this symbol three times anywhere, you will automatically receive 12 free spins, where you will benefit from a multiplier of up to 7x. With a bit of luck you can win some really big winnings here. During the free spins, the treasure chest is used as an alternative wild symbol, which can also replace all other symbols with the exception of the scatter. The combination of multipliers and wild symbols is of course particularly interesting because it can lead to immense winnings.

Gamble feature

As in many older slots, “Avalon” also has the popular gamble feature. Whenever you have made a profit, you can risk it and, in the best case, double it. To do this, you simply choose one of two playing cards (red or black). If you guess correctly, your winnings will double. However, if you are wrong with your tip, your winnings are lost. If you love risk, you can even quadruple your winnings by choosing diamonds, hearts, clubs or spades and being correct with your tip. Otherwise, the profit achieved here will also be lost.

Odds of winning

If you want to try out Avalon with smaller stakes, you can do so starting at 20 cents per spin. You can also bet up to 200 euros per spin if your wallet can accommodate that amount. The payout ratio of the game is a very fair 96,01% and the maximum win is 7.000 times your stake.

And finally ...

“Avalon” is an outdated slot, but due to its simple retro look it appeals primarily to players who have little use for colorful and overloaded new slots. For a slot of its age, “Avalon” still scores with very exciting gameplay, which also includes an exciting free spins round in which you can look forward to a combination of wild symbols and up to 7x multipliers. In my opinion, “Avalon” is a highly recommended slot that you can still play today.
